Remedial Massage Technique

When muscles and tendons become damaged or impaired, knotted and tense or immobile, Remedial Massage provides a healing treatment that can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow. Remedial massage holistically treats the whole body and traces the discomfort as far as possible back to the original cause, healing both the cause of the disorder as well as the symptoms.

It uses several specialised techniques to locate and repair damage and to support and speed up the body's own repair mechanisms. The massage is applied directly to the skin using a lubricating medium, usually oil, which ensures that the muscles associated with the disorder and mobilisation of the joint are deeply penetrated. Passive stretching moves are also used.

One of the primary goals of Remedial Massage is to speed venous blood return from the extremities (arms and legs). Remedial Massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissue of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It improves circulation and stretches the ligaments and tendons, keeping them subtle and young.

Remedial Massage stimulates the skin and nervous system. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has specific clinical advantages to assist in a medical, rehabilitation or remedial therapy program.

One of the immediate benefits of a Remedial Massage is a feeling of deep relaxation and calm. This occurs because the massage prompts the release of Endorphins, the brain chemicals (neuro-transmitters) that produce feelings of wellbeing.  Levels of stress hormones – such as Adrenalin, Cortisol and Norepinephrine – are also reduced.  Studies indicate that high levels of stress hormones impair the immune system.

Remedial Massage is greatly beneficial and can reduce symptoms by relaxing the tension in the muscles, stimulating the flow of blood through the muscles, breaking down and eliminating toxins, enhancing oxygenation of the brain and relaxing the nervous system and mind.

The skin is the largest organ of the human body and is packed with nerve endings. Remedial Massage works by soothing soft tissue and encouraging relaxation. It is especially effective in treating ‘vicious cycle’ complaints. For instance, a tension headache is often self-sustaining because the pain makes the sufferer clench the affected muscles even harder. This, in turn, creates more pain.

Modern studies have shown that Remedial Massage can be used to assist a variety of disorders, including anxiety, arthritis, back pain, chronic pain, constipation, depression, headache, insomnia and high blood pressure.
